Location: Benin, Cote I’voire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa
Duration: One academic year (dates vary by country)
The Experience: Each year, approximately 50 American volunteer teachers are assigned to educational institutions in sub-Saharan African countries to assist in improving the quality of teaching and learning, and influence behavioral change for sustainable educational reform. IFESH also assists in pedagogical design, curriculum development of English as a Second Language (ESL), conducting in-service workshops, demonstrative teaching, administrative management, the improvement of library resource centers and the development of training modules and advice on education policy.
Financial Info: Stipend (varies by country), housing, meals, and airfare are provided
Eligibility: U. S. citizen or Permanent Resident; bachelor’s degree; 3 years of experience as a teacher, professor, or administrator
Requirements: Educators attend an expenses-paid orientation in Phoenix, Arizona, prior to departure.
FYI: Placement locations vary; applicants should be flexible about country placement. Children and spouses may accompany the participant; if both spouses are applying to teach, IFESH will attempt to place the couple in the same country.
