The Experience: CEI is a non-profit dedicated to eliminating educational inequity in China by enlisting the most promising future leaders from the U. S. and China in the effort. Modeled after the U. S.’s Teach for America program, CEI places fellows in understaffed rural elementary, middle, and high schools. Fellows teach classes of 40-60 students for 12-18 hours per week plus preparation and extracurricular activity time.
Financial Info: Stipend commensurate with local salaries (varies by placement); housing during summer training and the academic year, generally on school grounds; summer orientation and training program; health insurance, including emergency medical evacuation coverage; travel grants on a need basis, with airfare to China generally being the responsibility of the fellow and CEI providing in-country transportation to the assigned teaching location; assistance obtaining student loan deferments. Fellows must provide a $315 deposit.
FYI: Established in 2008 under the auspices of Princeton University, Tsinghua University, and the Ford Foundation. CEI is the first and only organization to pair outstanding graduates from top universities in the U. S. and China in a long-term service initiative. Approximately 10% of applicants are accepted to the program, and Fellows are placed in the provinces of Yunnan, Hainan, Gansu, Sichuan, Qinghai, Guizhou, Henan, and Anhui.

The Experience: Adventures Cross Country (ARCC) offers Adventure, Community Service, International Travel and Wilderness Travel programs for teenagers. ARCC Trip Leaders focus on fostering constructive group dynamics; facilitating games, activities and initiatives; overseeing outfitted activities; and ensuring that each person in the group is able to safely achieve goals consistent with his or her abilities. Trip Leaders also provide natural and cultural history education relevant to their location as well as teach the curriculum designed for each of our trip types: Leadership, Language, Blue Water, Community Service and Discovery. Leaders will guide groups of up to sixteen students, with a co-leader, through rigorous adventure programs. Other leader responsibilities may include travel logistics, keeping a daily trip log, and communicating with office staff about the status of the trip.

The Experience: Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) offers 10-day pre-professional programs for students ages 15-18. The Experience: Semester at Sea offers summer and semester shipboard academic and experiential programs for college students (and a small number of older “lifelong learners”). Faculty develop and teach undergraduate-level courses (students receive college credit from the University of Virginia). In addition to teaching coursework, faculty make themselves available for discussions with students outside of the classroom as well as develop and lead in-country field trips for courses taught
Financial Info: $8,000 for teaching three courses (semester-long voyages); $5,350 for teaching two courses (summer voyages). Shipboard accommodation, meals, and a travel allowance are also provided ($900 for semester-long voyages, $700 for summer voyages).
Eligibility: An earned doctorate or highest appropriate terminal degree, fluency in English, minimum of three years recent full time undergraduate teaching experience, a demonstrated record of teaching ability and ability to work with undergraduate students in a close student/faculty relationship, a significant level of international expertise/experience in one of the major geographical areas of focus, a record of scholarly accomplishment in one discipline or equivalent professional experience
FYI: There are approximately 28 faculty members on board each voyage, teaching about 70 courses.
Requirements: The faculty member and any accompanying family members are responsible for obtaining any visas that must be acquired individually. The cost of obtaining these visas varies, but usually lies in the range of $200 per person. Non-U. S. passport holders are required to make their own visa arrangements and may require a visa to enter the United States.

The Experience: Global Routes offers summer travel programs for high school students and semester/gap year programs for college students.
High school programs combine adventure travel, community service, and a two- to three-week homestay in a remote rural village. These are co-leadership positions: two leaders (one man and one woman) lead a group of up to eighteen high school students.
College program leadership positions involve coordinating and supporting interns who live either singly or in pairs in villages as they teach at local primary and secondary schools. The leader is also responsible for organizing the group’s in-country orientation and managing the de-briefing process prior to their return.
The intention of the programs is to place students in an environment radically different from their own where they can reflect on their own life and culture. Leaders must facilitate this process in a fun and creative way in addition to meeting the logistical demands of managing a group in a developing country.

Interport lecturers are international scholars or professors living outside of the U. S. who are selected for their deep knowledge of a culture or field of study. They join the voyage for one to two weeks to serve as a resource for specific ports of call. The Interport Lecturer’s primary function and responsibility is to orient the shipboard community to a particular country or region. Generally, Interport Lecturers discuss topics based on their own field of research and expertise. They also give a general overview of, for example, the main challenges of a country, what will be faced in the future, and a brief review of the political climate. They also make recommendations for field experiences in the ports of call and make themselves available for discussions with individual faculty and students. Since Interport Lecturers are often invited to be guest speakers in various classes, it is suggested that they familiarize themselves with the course listing and the roster of faculty members, to assess which subjects are being taught.

The Experience: NG Student Expeditions runs programs focusing on travel, adventure, and learning; most also include a community service component. Programs are available for teenagers grades 9-12, two travel programs for college students (Peru and Tanzania), and two On Campus programs based at colleges in California and Maine. Groups range between 16 and 28 students, except for the On Campus program, which can accommodate up to 50 students. Two to three Trip Leaders manage each group; additionally, on each trip, a National Geographic photographer, writer, researcher, or explorer joins the group for a portion of the trip. Accommodation includes small, family-run inns and hostels; student centers; university housing; or research stations.

The Experience: Dragons offers summer programs for high school students as well as semester programs for college students aged 17-22. Programs vary by location, but each course explores a range of development issues, from issues in health care, resource management and environmental impact, to children’s and women’s issues, to peace and conflict studies. Through meetings with development professionals, participants learn first-hand how the efforts of community leaders and aid organizations both positively and negatively impact the region’s people, culture and environment. Though programs vary in their degree of physical challenge, exploration of the natural environment is integral to all Dragons experiences. Dragons Instructors work within a team of co-instructors. In addition to logistics, Instructors offer formal and informal lessons throughout the course on subjects as wide-ranging as history and culture, geology and weather, language, development, and ethical wilderness travel.

The Experience: AAVE offers domestic and international summer travel and adventure programs for teenagers aged 11-18 (programs are broken down into age groups). Programs have a wide variety of foci, ranging from language study to surfing to horseback riding (see website for specifics of each trip). Each trip incorporates community service and outdoor adventure experiences. All trips include one male and one female Trip Leader.
Financial Info: $300 per week stipend (more for returning Leaders), airfare, housing, meals, and all program activities
Eligibility: Minimum age 21, bachelor’s degree (or in the process of completing one), a maximum of one moving violation on the applicant’s driving record in the past three years, certification in Wilderness First Responder or Advanced Wilderness First Aid (lifeguard training is highly recommended), previous work with teenagers. Language skills are required for most international programs.
FYI: Eighty percent of all AAVE first-year jobs are within the United States
