Guide to Summers and Sabbaticals for Teachers: Semester at Sea Interport Lecturers

Semester at Sea Interport Lecturers
www.semesteratsea.org

Location: Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Egypt, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States (California, Hawaii, Virginia), Vietnam

Duration: One to two weeks

The Experience: Semester at Sea offers summer and semester shipboard academic and experiential programs for college students (and a small number of older “lifelong learners”). Interport lecturers are international scholars or professors living outside of the U. S. who are selected for their deep knowledge of a culture or field of study. They join the voyage for one to two weeks to serve as a resource for specific ports of call. The Interport Lecturer’s primary function and responsibility is to orient the shipboard community to a particular country or region. Generally, Interport Lecturers discuss topics based on their own field of research and expertise. They also give a general overview of, for example, the main challenges of a country, what will be faced in the future, and a brief review of the political climate. They also make recommendations for field experiences in the ports of call and make themselves available for discussions with individual faculty and students. Since Interport Lecturers are often invited to be guest speakers in various classes, it is suggested that they familiarize themselves with the course listing and the roster of faculty members, to assess which subjects are being taught.

Financial Info: Airfare, shipboard housing, meals, $100 per day honorarium

Eligibility: Fluency in English, demonstrated record of ability to work with undergraduate students, a significant level of international expertise/experience in one of the countries and/or major geographical areas of focus

FYI: It is usually possible for a spouse to accompany Interport Lecturers on the journey for $20 per day
