The Experience: The Student Conservation Association (SCA) places volunteer crews in more than 100 spectacular national parks, forests, refuges, and urban sites across the United States. Crew Leaders work in teams of two alongside crews of 6, 8 or 10 high school students in backcountry, front country, or urban community sites. Typical projects involve physical labor up to eight hours per day and include such activities as trail maintenance, construction of bridges and shelters, repair of stone steps, improvement of wildlife habitats, and invasive plan removal.

Eligibility: Minimum age 21, driver’s license, certification in First Aid and CPR, outdoor skills (which can including hiking, camping, cooking, map/compass skills) and/or conservation work skills or related skills (which can include carpentry, construction, landscaping, gardening, masonry). The Experience: Adventures Cross Country (ARCC) offers Adventure, Community Service, International Travel and Wilderness Travel programs for teenagers. ARCC Trip Leaders focus on fostering constructive group dynamics; facilitating games, activities and initiatives; overseeing outfitted activities; and ensuring that each person in the group is able to safely achieve goals consistent with his or her abilities. Trip Leaders also provide natural and cultural history education relevant to their location as well as teach the curriculum designed for each of our trip types: Leadership, Language, Blue Water, Community Service and Discovery. Leaders will guide groups of up to sixteen students, with a co-leader, through rigorous adventure programs. Other leader responsibilities may include travel logistics, keeping a daily trip log, and communicating with office staff about the status of the trip.

The Experience: Slide Ranch offers a summer camp for children ages 5-12. Teachers-in-Residence lead groups of 8 students in week-long experiential educational day programs planned by the Teacher-in-Residence. Activities may include learning to care for farm animals and gardens, exploring miles of wildland trails, discovering ocean tide pools, cook, and participating in arts & crafts projects.

Most weeks also include afternoon sessions involving teacher meetings, gardening, animal care, and/or facilities maintenance. Occasional teacher observations complement the position. The Experience: The Slide Ranch Teacher-in-Residence Internship offers a hands-on experience in agricultural and environmental education on the cultivated and wild lands of the Pacific Coast. Teachers instruct five days per week and plan and lead experiential educational programs that include the exploration of the farm, garden, trails and tide pools. Teachers are also responsible for daily ranch chores and maintenance projects, some of which can be physically demanding. The Experience: LEAP Now offers group study/travel programs for college students ages 17-21. For most of its existence LEAP Now focused on semester-long programs; the company is now shifting toward lengthier 9-month programs. The One Revolution program involves five months of group travel and service in Central America, Asia and Africa. Trip Leaders manage logistics, supervise participants, and lead discussions and activities focused on personal development, leadership, and spirituality.

The Experience: Semester at Sea offers summer and semester shipboard academic and experiential programs for college students (and a small number of older “lifelong learners”). Faculty develop and teach undergraduate-level courses (students receive college credit from the University of Virginia). In addition to teaching coursework, faculty make themselves available for discussions with students outside of the classroom as well as develop and lead in-country field trips for courses taught

Financial Info: $8,000 for teaching three courses (semester-long voyages); $5,350 for teaching two courses (summer voyages). Shipboard accommodation, meals, and a travel allowance are also provided ($900 for semester-long voyages, $700 for summer voyages).

Eligibility: An earned doctorate or highest appropriate terminal degree, fluency in English, minimum of three years recent full time undergraduate teaching experience, a demonstrated record of teaching ability and ability to work with undergraduate students in a close student/faculty relationship, a significant level of international expertise/experience in one of the major geographical areas of focus, a record of scholarly accomplishment in one discipline or equivalent professional experience

FYI: There are approximately 28 faculty members on board each voyage, teaching about 70 courses.

Requirements: The faculty member and any accompanying family members are responsible for obtaining any visas that must be acquired individually. The cost of obtaining these visas varies, but usually lies in the range of $200 per person. Non-U. S. passport holders are required to make their own visa arrangements and may require a visa to enter the United States.

The Experience: Semester at Sea offers summer and semester shipboard academic and experiential programs for college students (and a small number of older “lifelong learners”). Interport lecturers are international scholars or professors living outside of the U. S. who are selected for their deep knowledge of a culture or field of study. They join the voyage for one to two weeks to serve as a resource for specific ports of call. The Interport Lecturer’s primary function and responsibility is to orient the shipboard community to a particular country or region. Generally, Interport Lecturers discuss topics based on their own field of research and expertise. They also give a general overview of, for example, the main challenges of a country, what will be faced in the future, and a brief review of the political climate. They also make recommendations for field experiences in the ports of call and make themselves available for discussions with individual faculty and students. Since Interport Lecturers are often invited to be guest speakers in various classes, it is suggested that they familiarize themselves with the course listing and the roster of faculty members, to assess which subjects are being taught.

The Experience
: NG Student Expeditions runs programs focusing on travel, adventure, and learning; most also include a community service component. Programs are available for teenagers grades 9-12, two travel programs for college students (Peru and Tanzania), and two On Campus programs based at colleges in California and Maine. Groups range between 16 and 28 students, except for the On Campus program, which can accommodate up to 50 students. Two to three Trip Leaders manage each group; additionally, on each trip, a National Geographic photographer, writer, researcher, or explorer joins the group for a portion of the trip. Accommodation includes small, family-run inns and hostels; student centers; university housing; or research stations.

The Experience: AAVE offers domestic and international summer travel and adventure programs for teenagers aged 11-18 (programs are broken down into age groups). Programs have a wide variety of foci, ranging from language study to surfing to horseback riding (see website for specifics of each trip). Each trip incorporates community service and outdoor adventure experiences. All trips include one male and one female Trip Leader.

Financial Info: $300 per week stipend (more for returning Leaders), airfare, housing, meals, and all program activities

Eligibility: Minimum age 21, bachelor’s degree (or in the process of completing one), a maximum of one moving violation on the applicant’s driving record in the past three years, certification in Wilderness First Responder or Advanced Wilderness First Aid (lifeguard training is highly recommended), previous work with teenagers. Language skills are required for most international programs.

FYI: Eighty percent of all AAVE first-year jobs are within the United States
