The Experience: Teach For India is a non-profit dedicated to eliminating educational inequity in India by engaging promising future leaders in teaching in underserved areas in the cities of Mumbai and Pune. Modeled after the U. S.’s Teach For America program, TFI places fellows in understaffed, English-medium elementary, middle, and high schools.

The Experience: Habitat for Humanity annually selects thirteen K-12 teachers to participate in a week-long awareness-building program. Participants spend the first half of each day building housing for low-income community members; afternoons and evening are dedicated to learning about Habitat and the local host community through tours, visits to other non-profits and meetings with homeowners and affiliate staff.

FYI: As part of participation in the Habitat Teacher Fellows program, participants commit to leading a new Habitat project with their students following the conclusion of the program. The Experience: CEI is a non-profit dedicated to eliminating educational inequity in China by enlisting the most promising future leaders from the U. S. and China in the effort. Modeled after the U. S.’s Teach for America program, CEI places fellows in understaffed rural elementary, middle, and high schools. Fellows teach classes of 40-60 students for 12-18 hours per week plus preparation and extracurricular activity time.

Financial Info: Stipend commensurate with local salaries (varies by placement); housing during summer training and the academic year, generally on school grounds; summer orientation and training program; health insurance, including emergency medical evacuation coverage; travel grants on a need basis, with airfare to China generally being the responsibility of the fellow and CEI providing in-country transportation to the assigned teaching location; assistance obtaining student loan deferments. Fellows must provide a $315 deposit.

FYI: Established in 2008 under the auspices of Princeton University, Tsinghua University, and the Ford Foundation. CEI is the first and only organization to pair outstanding graduates from top universities in the U. S. and China in a long-term service initiative. Approximately 10% of applicants are accepted to the program, and Fellows are placed in the provinces of Yunnan, Hainan, Gansu, Sichuan, Qinghai, Guizhou, Henan, and Anhui.

Resident Director Positions Available with American Councils

Description: American Councils is currently seeking qualified Resident Directors to work overseas on summer programs ranging from five- to eight-weeks in length. Programs are designed for high school students, university students or teachers and are focused on foreign language acquisition. Countries and number of positions include:

Azerbaijan (1), China (6), Egypt (1), Japan (2), Nigeria (1), Russia (11), South Korea (1), Tajikistan (3), Tanzania (1) and Turkey (3).

Dates: Early June – to mid August 2010 (exact appointment dates will vary by program).

Responsibilities: Resident Directors represent American Councils during the tenure of their appointment. They must be available to program participants on a daily basis; observe participant classes at the host university; meet regularly with teachers, administrators, and participants; and arrange group travel and cultural programs. Resident Directors must be available to participants during any emergencies that arise and must communicate regularly with the American Councils program staff in Washington, DC. Responsibilities include logistics for the group while overseas, communications, counseling of individual students when needed, and troubleshooting, Resident Directors oversee a program budget, and are responsible for proper documentation of program expenditures and timely completion of a budget report at the end of the month and end of the program. Prior to departure, all Resident Directors must attend American Councils orientation programs for both staff and participants. Resident Directors are required to travel with their respective participant groups at the beginning of their programs and return to Washington, DC, with the group at the end of the program. Resident Directors report to the DC-based Program Manager.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher in language of host country or area studies or equivalent; advanced language skills — written and oral (minimum 2/2+ on ACTFL scale) in the relevant target language; study, work, or extensive travel experience in host country; experience overseeing and guiding groups; demonstrated skills in academic and personal counseling; and demonstrated skills in general financial accountability.

Job Description

This position involves teaching two college-level marine science courses, Introduction to Oceanography (3 credit) and Introduction to Marine Biology (3 Credits). This includes all lecture and practical activities, developing and grading quizzes and exams, and grading papers and presentations. Other duties include playing an active role in every aspect of life afloat. This will include mentoring the students, participation in sailing and scuba activities, cooking, cleaning and provisioning. Other duties will including student supervision during island activities (both academic and non-academic) such as field trips and island hikes.

Position Duration

Annual employment with a typical contract running from September 15 – September 14 the following year. An annual contract covers three specific operational units:

Fall: September 20th – December 14th
Spring: January 8th – April 2nd
Summer: June 5th – August 23rd

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a minimum of a Masters degree in Oceanography or Marine Science with 18 or more credit hours of documented oceanography or marine science classes taken at the master’s level (or higher). Experience teaching to an undergraduate level. Although not required, additional qualifications may include PADI Divemaster or Instructor: USCG captains license; RYA / MCA Yachtmaster or Master of Yachts 200 ton; Emergency Medical Technician or other similar medical certification.

Employee Characteristics

The successful candidate will be a positive role model and be able to create a constructive learning environment. They will be able to feel comfortable living on a boat in close proximity to others for months at a time, and will also be willing to assist in all aspects of the program in addition to teaching the marine science classes. They will be a self-starter and be able to work without direct supervision. Excellent teaching and personal communications skills are also necessary. Life aboard presents many challenges and so the candidate must also exhibit the following: flexibility to changing environments, weather and circumstances; good judgment and the ability to interact patiently and constructively with our students; willingness to work irregular hours in remote locations; a sense of teamwork, humor and professional maturity.

Gauruma seeks an Environmental Educator for a commitment of 6 months. Candidates should have experience teaching environmental studies and/or a BA/BS in a related field with experience as a mentor/tutor. Teaching is conducted in Spanish, so Spanish fluency is required. Candidates must be able to live in a small village (population 300) and ideally will have experience working on a cross-cultural team or studying/working in a foreign country. In addition to teaching, the job includes activities related to the development of ecotourism in the Cangrejal Watershed. Responsibilities of the position are at times mixed and everyone is expected to help with tasks such as cleaning, supervising people in our computer lab, chaperoning students, and interacting with visitors. Responsibilities unique to this position, however, include teaching a total of 6 classes each week, meeting with other NGOs and businesses regarding mutual projects, attending occasional festivals to help promote Guaruma, and working with Executive Director and Assistant Director on projects. The position includes a stipend of approximately $80 per month and housing.

Guaruma, a small non-profit located in Las Mangas, Honduras, offers environmental education, nature photography, computer, and English classes to local youth between the ages of 10 and 20 as part of an after-school program. Through these classes the students develop employable skills and learn to appreciate the natural beauty of the Cangrejal watershed. In the future they will become decision makers in their communities who understand the importance of environmental conservation and the potential for ecotourism in the area.

The Experience: The Yemen-America Language Institute (YALI) at Yemen College of Middle Eastern Studies, established in 1975 by the U.S. Embassy in Yemen, hires English Teachers to staff its four-week-long summer sessions. YALI is an English language institute with approximately 70 teachers and average enrollments of 2,500 students. Facilities are located in a garden-like setting and include four buildings with 40 classrooms, a self-access multi-media lab, and a 48-station computer lab. English Teachers instruct courses for teenagers aged from 10 to 17, prepare lessons plans and assessments, and develop supplemental materials and activities.
