The Experience: Ferry Beach Ecology School (FBES) hires 15 staff naturalists each term to become ecology educators for their residential science program. Located on Saco Bay on the coast of Maine (20 miles south of Portland), FBES provides experiential ecology education for grades 3-8 from schools throughout northern New England. The weekly programs begin each Monday morning and ends on Friday afternoon. There are two terms each school year– the fall session (early September through mid-November) and the spring session (mid-March through mid-June). Staff naturalists develop and lead ecosystem-based lessons to areas such as the coastal forest, ocean sand dunes & beaches, rocky tide pools, and a salt marsh estuary. Each naturalist is responsible for a teaching group of approximately 10-12 students for three lessons every day, with shared supervision of students between and after lessons plus some general maintenance of the site and program. All FBES naturalists are given a week of training prior to teaching children, which includes covering general knowledge of coastal ecosystems, basic ecology, and the methodology of teaching children experientially in the out-of-doors. Although sample lesson plans are provided in the FBES Teaching Guide, staff naturalists are encouraged to create and develop their own lesson plans and activities.

Kosciuszko Foundation Teaching English in Poland 2009 Program Cancelled
The Secretary-General of the Polish National Commission for UNESCO has informed the President of the Kosciuszko Foundation that the Polish Ministry of National Education is canceling all summer foreign language camps supported by the Ministry due to the state of the economy.
Over a period of eighteen summers, the Teaching English in Poland Program has organized 100 camps serving more than 10,000 Polish children. The Kosciuszko Foundation hopes the program will be reinstated in 2010; information regarding the availability of funding should be available in April 2010 on the Foundation’s website (www.kosciuszkofoundation.org/EDSummer.html).

The Experience: The Kosciuszko Foundation, The Polish National Commission for UNESCO, and the Polish Ministry of National Education work in conjunction to orchestrate the Teaching English in Poland Program, in which American volunteers instruct English classes at camps at four boarding schools located throughout the country. Teachers (American volunteers with bachelor’s degrees) work with Teaching Assistants (American high school and college students) to develop curriculum and conduct a homeroom period and three fifty-minute classes each weekday morning for small groups of Polish students who are generally at the intermediate level of proficiency. Teachers and Teaching Assistants organize and lead American extracurricular activities such as musicals, talent shows, sports (especially softball, volley ball, basketball, and soccer), board games, scavenger hunts, crafts, campus newspaper, debates, etc., during afternoon and evening recreational periods. They are also required to accompany the students on field trips scheduled during weekdays and on weekends and to maintain the use of English in all contacts with students. The three-week instructional period is followed by a one-week, fully funded tour of cultural and historical sights in Poland.
Financial Info: Housing (shared room in a dormitory), board, medical/accident insurance, and one-week tour are provided; Teachers and Teaching Assistants pay for their own airfare to Poland plus a $200 registration fee
Eligibility: Experienced teachers/administrators certified in the United States, educators with private/parochial school or other verifiable teaching experience, college/university faculty, and those engaged in student services (school nurse, social worker, guidance counselor, school psychologist, etc.) are eligible for participation are eligibile to serve as Teachers. Although educators who are actively involved in teaching are given priority, beginning teachers, retirees, and those on leave are also considered for participation. College students and high school students who are at least eighteen years of age can apply for Teaching Assistant positions. All applicants must be native English speakers.
FYI: Teachers participating in the elementary school and junior high campuses may bring their own younger children who are at least thirteen years of age. These younger Americans serve as peer tutors.

The Experience: The Student Conservation Association (SCA) places volunteer crews in more than 100 spectacular national parks, forests, refuges, and urban sites across the United States. Crew Leaders work in teams of two alongside crews of 6, 8 or 10 high school students in backcountry, front country, or urban community sites. Typical projects involve physical labor up to eight hours per day and include such activities as trail maintenance, construction of bridges and shelters, repair of stone steps, improvement of wildlife habitats, and invasive plan removal.

The Experience: The Sadie Nash Leadership Project offers a Summer Institute, a rigorous exploration of leadership with a commitment to social justice and feminism. The Institute offers girls ages 14-18 from New York and New Jersey the opportunity to examine their leadership potential. The program focuses on the forces that lead to equality and justice both locally and globally as well as the connections between identity, power, and privilege. Faculty members teach the coursework component, which helps focus each young woman’s ideas, questions, and concerns as they relate to their developing leadership and activism. Faculty is comprised of women and men who are teachers (at the high school or college level), activists, and professionals. Faculty will have interest and expertise in topics appropriate to a feminist youth leadership organization and will design creative and engaging coursework that emphasizes the real life experience of women/girls/youth as well as their achievements, identity, and collective status in the world. The goal of the coursework is to challenge traditional understandings of relevant subjects (such as civil rights, human rights, history, education, health, identity, community, religion, and leadership).

FYI: Each faculty member teaches one course, two times a week for 6 weeks, and attends 6-10 mandatory hours of intensive professional development training in June. The Experience: IndiCorps places young professionals of Indian origin in grassroots service organizations in India. The first month of the fellowship consists of a month-long orientation to India, the Indicorps philosophy, and practical living. In conjunction with grassroots fieldwork, Indicorps also requires fellows to attend periodic workshops that encourage participants to deepen their understanding of Indian development, to reflect, to share progress, to collectively solve problems, and to re-energize. Some fellows opt for a second year to broaden their understanding of development and take leadership in managing projects or Indicorps programs.
